5 Things To Do In Cambridge This Winter

Cambridge is a charming, bustling town known for its picturesque landscapes and welcoming community. You may have missed the very popular Autumn Festival but there's still plenty to enjoy here in the winter months.

Here are the five activities to experience in Cambridge this winter:

1. Explore the Cambridge Farmers' Market

Start your winter adventure by visiting the Cambridge Farmers' Market. Held every Saturday morning, this market is a treasure trove of local produce, artisan goods, and delicious food - and our go-to for the outrageously delicious Cornish Pasties! Sample seasonal fruits, freshly baked bread, and gourmet cheeses. If a bigger Trash & Treasure is your vibe, these are a regular feature every second Saturday of the month. Markets are an easy way to support local businesses and enjoy the vibrant community atmosphere.

2. Visit Lake Karapiro

Lake Karapiro is a stunning man-made lake that offers a variety of outdoor activities happening all year round. In April they will host the Karapiro Marathon and The New Zealand and Oceania Canoe Sprint Championship. If you prefer to stay dry, enjoy a scenic walk or bike ride along the Te Awa River Ride trails while taking in the breathtaking views of the almighty Waikato River and the surrounding countryside.

3. Discover the Cambridge Museum

Waipa District Council continues to invest in highlighting the interesting history of this area. The Cambridge Museum, a small but fascinating museum, offers insights into the town's history, from its early Tanui iwi history (the indigenous Māori inhabitants) to its development as a hub for horse breeding and agriculture. The exhibits are well-curated and provide a deeper understanding of the area's rich heritage.

4. Warm Up with a Coffee Tour

Cambridge boasts a thriving coffee culture, and winter is the perfect time to embark on a coffee tour. Visit some of the town's best cafes, such as Paddock Café, Alpino Cambridge, Corner Deli and Joe’s Garage and the Suburban Kitchen (in the ‘burbs), The Bikery Cafe (at the world renowned velodrome) and Reload Cafe (our local favourite in Leamington), to sample expertly brewed coffees and indulge in delectable pastries. It's an ideal way to stay warm and energized as you explore the town and surrounds.

5. Visit New Zealand largest fenced eco-sanctuary at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari

Experience the life force of the maunga! Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is a haven for nature lovers and those interested in New Zealand's native wildlife and flora. This ecological reserve is located just a short drive from Cambridge, is home to many of Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique and endangered wildlife, and provides an excellent opportunity to experience the country's natural beauty during winter.

Why Visit in Winter?

Kids are free in the April school holidays! There are Fewer Crowds! You may chance on a unique wildlife sighting of some of the more elusive native species, such as the kiwi, in their natural habitat. You can experience the breathtaking winter scenery of lush greenery and mist-covered mountains that offer a unique and enchanting backdrop during winter.

Join a Guided Walking Tour or explore the trails at your own pace. The Night Tours are a magical experience you will never forget.

Incorporating a visit to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari into your winter plans in Cambridge will provide a memorable and enriching experience, allowing you to connect with New Zealand's stunning natural environment.
